a few coin gifts from kin

just got some old silver from some older kin I was visiting, I started talking about my new vice, coins, and off they go and come back with a crown royal bag with a bunch of pre 64 pocket change, some bicentennial halves and quarters, and a bunch of morgans and peace dollars.

we went through em and I received the following as gifts: one nice little merc, 43, probably VF, one 38 quarter pretty worn, five pre 64 roosevelt dimes, one 1897 indian head cent, one canadian cent 1916-- what I would call a "large cent" cause it's about one millimeter wider than a washington quarter across the face, one very worn walking half, two crappy peace dollars, and one very frosty morgan 21 possibly MS condition, and two nicely toned 1885 morgans probably XF or maybe a little under that.

I told em how much they were worth but received these as gifts, not out of any merit of my own but pure kinfolk generosity. Tried to pay but quite frankly I didnt have the cash on hand, they turned down what I had in my wallet. I guess today was "my lucky day" eh? Sometimes you just dont know what people will do for you out of kindness unless you stop to take a moment to talk and catch up with people.

Did you try to persuade them to keep the coins in case we devolve into a barter economy?

Good for you, Anty Ep.

My wife and I used to send out various Silver gifts for weddings, birthdays and the like. Nobody appreciated the gifts.

I'm glad that you not only received some irreplaceable items, but that you "appreciated" them.

What an uplifting story!

I would sell them on E-bay for a quick profit.
Just kidding, nice gift.

...

Maybe it will just take some time.

At the same time I actually helped them organize some other gifts for the little ones in our extended family, from the same batch of coins. Some will appreciate the gifts more than others but it will have been a fun project. Coins have a way of carrying memories for dates, places and poeple---dont they?
